Project Adopt A Safe Haven

National Baby Safe Haven Decals - English and Spanish

Why: National Safe Haven Alliance (NSHA) has developed the Project Adopt a Safe Haven so that the community may become actively involved in preventing infant abandonment through awareness and education.

Who: Any corporation, church, business, family, or individual can become a “Sponsor” and “Adopt” a local Safe Haven facility/site in their community or in any state.

*The sponsor can choose the location or NSHA can match a sponsor to a location.

What: By becoming a “Sponsor”, there will be a direct impact by reaching an individual Safe Haven provider and directly promoting adoption and Safe Haven efforts.

Where: This is a national campaign. We ask you to work with NSHA to promote this project in your state.

When: This program will be implemented starting November 2, 2018. This is an ongoing project nationwide.

Sponsored Safe Haven Provider/Location: Hospitals are approved locations in every state. Fire Station, Police station and other Safe Haven providers are dependent upon state law.

The approved provider/location  is “adopted” and receives signage, basic provider education and training in alignment with state Safe Haven statute, and an infant care package (diaper, onesie, and receiving blanket.)

Adopt A Safe Haven Sponsor: The generous sponsor will receive a certificate of adopted site, communication regarding the sign installation, training provided and a bundle of special perks to say THANK YOU!

FAQ

How does the law work?

The law saves babies from unsafe abandonment. It says that parents who do not harm their baby will not be prosecuted for abandonment if they hand their newborn to a responsible adult at a Safe Haven location. It gives a desperate parent a responsible alternative. Depending on your state, the law tells you where are the accepted locations that you can leave your baby and up to what age, with no questions asked as long as they are unharmed.

What do I say when I leave my baby?

Once you get to one of the accepted locations (Hospitals, Law Enforcement Agencies, etc. depending on your state) You will need to relinquish your baby with one of the staff members at the location, and explain that you are relinquishing your infant to them under the Safe Haven Law

You might be asked to fill out some medical information and other important facts about your newborn, yourself, and the father, mainly for the reason of passing along any and all information that might be important to the adoptive parents for the infant. The person who you are relinquishing your baby to will make sure that the baby is unharmed in any way, and if that is the case, then you will be free to go with no questions asked, and no trouble.
