National Safe Haven Awareness Day: April 13, 2010

Throughout the month, the National Safe Haven Alliance and affiliated organizations will be holding special events in their areas to raise awareness of their local Safe Haven laws, with the intention of saving the lives of mothers and babies. Going forward, NSHA will highlight some of these activities.

In Washington, DC, the National Safe Haven Alliance will sponsor a Poster Contest for DC Schools, inviting submissions of posters with the themes of Safe Baby, Safe Place, Safe Haven and No Shame, No Blame – Save a Baby's Life. Entries should illustrate a message that communicates that hospitals in the community are safe havens to take a newborn baby that a mother can't or doesn't want to care for. A secondary message is that there's no shame or blame in choosing to give your baby to a responsible adult at a hospital who will make sure the baby is cared for. Contest details are provided below:

National Safe Haven Day Poster Contest

Guidelines:

  1. The contest is open to two groups: children ages 11-14 and 15-19.
  2. The purpose of the contest is to identify a poster that can be used to educate the public about Baby Safe Haven Laws
  3. The themes of the poster contest are Safe Baby, Safe Place, Safe Haven and No Shame, No Blame – Save a Baby's Life. Entries should illustrate a message that communicates that hospitals in the community are safe havens to take a newborn baby that a mother can't or doesn't want to care for. A secondary message is that there's no shame or blame in choosing to give your baby to a responsible adult at a hospital who will make sure the baby is cared for.
  4. Entries should not include any state or regional logos or symbols. Trademark symbols or characters (e.g. Snoopy) are also prohibited.
  5. There are no size requirements for submission. Entries can be horizontal or vertical.
  6. The original art must be submitted. Copies will not be accepted.
  7. Each entry should be accompanied by the Artwork Submission and Release Form which can be downloaded from www.nationalsafehavenalliance.org.
  8. The deadline for entry is April 10, 2010
  9. Poster entries should be mailed to:

  10. The artist must give permission allowing the Alliance to adapt, reproduce and distribute the posters nationally. Download the Artwork Submission and Release Form from www.nationalsafehavenalliance.org, and tape to the back of the poster. Please also clearly print the artist's name in the lower right-hand corner on the back of the poster.
  11. The following information will be added to the winning poster: NSHA's toll free number, National Safe Haven Day Date, Artist's first name. Public recognition information will be in accordance with all Child Protection laws.
  12. The posters will be judged by members of the National Safe Haven Alliance in Washington, DC. The artist of the winning poster will be notified by April 13, 2010.
  13. Posters will not be returned unless requested with submission by the artist.
